Interview SOP from Someone Who Successfully Switched Careers 3 Times in 4 Years in the UK
It’s been over a month since I was laid off. With the new year here and seeing many girls getting interview invites, I want to share the interview SOP I’ve developed over the years. If you prepare using this method, passing first and second rounds is usually not a problem.
The core method revolves around the 3 Whys.
🟠 1. Why this company (the order matters!)
Go to the company website and list out keywords from their culture and behaviours sections. You’ll also reuse these for the other two questions.
Summarize in one sentence what the company does:
Company X uses [method/solution] to solve [what problem] for [which group].
Use storytelling to show how your past experience aligns with their solutions or the problems they solve.
Give examples of how your way of working matches their working style and attitude (show you’re a good fit to work with them).
Show value alignment (demonstrate loyalty). Many people use diversity here—for example, as someone from a minority background, you value companies where different perspectives are encouraged and trusted.
🟠 2. Why you
Extract keywords from the JD (job description) in three areas:
experience, skills, and industry.Prepare answers for each using the STAR method:
Situation: a past job or project you worked on
Task: tasks taken from nouns in the JD
Action: use verbs + nouns from the JD (skills/software, etc.), plus adverbs from the company’s behaviours section
Result: use nouns from the JD + your own data/metrics
Finally, combine your experience + skills + industry knowledge into one strong “Why you” answer (give them solid reasons to choose you).
🟠 3. Why this role
Summarize the role in one sentence:
What does this role do, and what impact does it have on the company/team/business?Show how the responsibilities match your passion.
Align again with the company’s culture and behaviours. Give examples like self-learning skills, certifications, reading, or side projects.
Explain how this role connects to your long-term career goals (show long-term alignment).
Before interviews, practice AI mock interviews on sites like cookd.ai. It feels like leveling up in a game—you can choose difficulty and interview type. The questions are tailored to your target companies. In one of my mocks, I was grilled so hard I was sweating! Afterward, you get performance data and improvement suggestions. Since their question bank is large, some questions might even show up in final rounds.
🟠 Small tips
Search on YouTube: job title + interview to see how locals interview for that role.
After drafting your SOP answers, paste them into ChatGPT to polish them into more natural spoken English.
One more thing:
Mock interviews are extremely important. They help you maintain your speaking fluency and avoid getting nervous.
