How did I land my first job with visa sponsorship?
1️⃣ Get your mindset right
There are no shortcuts in the UK job market. Don’t rely on luck. Most people don’t succeed after sending just dozens of applications — it often takes hundreds. The more you apply, the higher your chances.
2️⃣ Diversify your application channels
✅ LinkedIn: Apply for experienced-hire roles and network to learn about internal situations
✅ Bright Network: Very useful for tracking grad scheme openings
✅ Google: Search for part-time jobs and internships to strengthen your CV
3️⃣ Apply early and stick to the timeline
The earlier you apply, the better your chances. In 2023, I usually completed OT and VI within a week of a role opening. If you delay, you may be squeezed out. Big companies often open grad schemes in July for entry the following July. For one-year master’s students especially, you need to hit the ground running and apply as soon as autumn recruitment starts — otherwise, you’ll miss your chance.
4️⃣ How I prepared for OT & VI
I tried hiring a coach (and spent quite a bit), read experience posts on Xiaohongshu, checked real questions on Glassdoor, and networked with employees in relevant teams to ask what they were tested on.
👉 Remember: no coach can guarantee success. They can only increase your probability. In the end, it comes down to your ability + a bit of luck.
5️⃣ AC & final interviews
Show a clear understanding of the role. For example, in a rotation program, being able to name the departments you’re interested in and explain why can earn points.
In group interviews, don’t obsess over being the leader. I only improved after many rejections. Later, I learned to control the pace and summarise ideas well, which actually made my group performance stand out.
There really are no shortcuts in the UK job hunt. It takes preparation and persistence. Keep your mindset steady, apply widely, apply early, and prepare thoroughly. Even if you face many rejections at the beginning, you’ll gradually build experience and get closer to the offer you want.
